The role of CEO encompasses many responsibilities. In addition to sales, marketing, forecasting, and profitability, CEOs of major corporations also bear a burden of responsibility to the boards they govern and to the consumers they serve. One of those responsibilities is to identify responsible energy sources. That makes clean energy – energy that doesn’t pollute or otherwise harm the environment – among the myriad responsibilities of corporate CEOs.
Whether your corporation is product or service based, it relies on energy to design, manufacture, print, deliver, or dispose of the products and services it provides. Unlike “dirty” energy sources like coal, natural gas, and oil, clean energy emphasizes the reduction of carbon emissions and the use of naturally renewable energy resources. Choosing clean and renewable sources of energy mean opting for environmentally friendly energy sources. Those include many of the following:
Because of their huge consumer reach and mass production capabilities, large corporations are ideally positioned to have a huge impact on the choice and effect of clean energy. When companies make a point of not only procuring renewable energy, but of making consumers aware of this choice, they do three important things. First, they protect the environment. Secondly, they reach a whole new market segment of environmentally aware consumers who prefer to do business with likeminded companies. Thirdly, they make a new segment of their target market aware of the importance of environmental sustainability.
Renewable energy reduces the amount of greenhouse gas emissions that pollute the air. Some – like wind and solar power – are simple to understand. Anything powered by the wind or sun is obviously renewable. Others – like geothermal energy – require a more scientific explanation. Still others, like hydroelectricity – which relies on water – harnesses the amazing force of water. Water, in these instances, is held back by a dam and released at strategic points allowing its force to produce a truly clean, renewable, powerful source of energy. In fact, according to Wikipedia, hydropower accounts for as much as 16% of all renewable energy sources around the world. That number is expected to increase by as much as 3.1% annually.
As you can see, clean energy is more easily attainable than you might think. When corporations champion its use, jobs are created, energy supplies are diversified, pollutants are limited, and long and short-term cost savings are realized.
